#InspiringLatinos - “You are blessed and burdened with this history.” -Andrea Herrera
Meet Andrea Herrera who is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at @uccs. Herrera’s mom came to the United States from Cuba. Herrera was born into a closely knit Cuban diasporic community in Philadelphia. Andrea grew up speaking Spanish, and her parents helped to instill her cultural heritage in her as she grew up. Her heritage greatly shaped her creative work as a writer.
She took a position as the @fulbrightassociation Distinguished Chair in American Studies at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin, Poland in spring 2006 @fulbrightpoland. She has received numerous awards for her teaching and research. She has recently performed research on trauma being inherited genetically. She lives out her passion for helping others and the community by serving in her local community. She co-founded the Matrix Center Women’s and Ethnic Studies Program. She has served on boards in her community for ArtSpace and Future Self. Future Self is a former art program that helped underserved youth. Herrera has also shown interest in supporting veterans with trauma. She had a student in one of her classes that suffered from PTSD, and she took the initiative to take classes herself on how to help students that have gone through trauma.
Her accomplishments continue as she is a President’s Teaching Scholar and the recipient of the University of Colorado system-wide Thomas Jefferson Award, the Elizabeth D. Gee Memorial Lectureship Award, and the 2015 Chase Award. Dr. Herrera has greatly advanced the Latino community through her community involvement and creative writing.
