Is stress making you fat? 😱
What is stress?
Stress is your body's response to emotional or mental pressure. There are lots of ways that stress can manifest… you may feel pain in your chest, start sweating, your heart may beat faster, you may struggle to sleep, you may bite your nails, and you may lose weight or gain weight. The list is endless. Stress isn't always necessarily a bad thing, but chronic or long term stress can have a negative affect mentally and physically, and needs to be treated.
How does stress affect you?
So stress can stop you losing weight, and alternatively, it can stop you gaining muscle! When we are stressed we produce the hormone cortisol. If we have an excess of this hormone it will attack what muscle we do have, feeding off it for energy, as well as slowing the metabolism. It will also store fat in our abdominal area as an energy reserve for later use. Always the stomach area isn’t it!! 😑 High cortisol also can increase our blood pressure, blood sugar levels and can cause fatigue. Lastly, a release of cortisol and adrenaline can leave you with an increased appetite. So stress eating is actually a real scientific thing! 🤷🏼♀️ So you can see, there are many different ways that being stressed can impact your health and fitness.
What can we do to reduce stress?
