Born on February 22, 1732, George Washington was a founding father, military general, and the first President of the United States. Starting his career as a surveyor, Washington would become the head of the Virginia militia and fought during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). This experience would help Washington become a prominent figure in the American Revolution. At the Second continental congress, the delegation unanimously voted him as the commander of the Army. Washington was able to keep the military together through his ability to give direction and motivation and led the struggling colonial army to success. While at first they consistently lost battles but still held their own, the victories at the battles of Trenton (December 26, 1777) and Princeton (January 3, 1777) raised American moral. With aid from the French and Washington’s leadership, the Americans won the war at the Siege of Yorktown. The war made Washington a national hero. After the passage of the Constitution, Washington was unanimously voted by the Electoral college as the First President of the United States in 1788. During his presidency he set many precedents such as a presidential cabinet and only serving a maximum of two terms. During his Farewell Address, Washington advised America against political parties and encouraged a policy of isolationism. Washington passed away on December 14, 1799.
