Does a First Officer fly the airplane? What’s the difference between a Captain and a First Officer?
People often ask me those type of questions curious and eager to learn about our profession. To the question: “who flies the airplane” the answer is BOTH ✌️👩✈️👨✈️ Most of my friends that are not in the aviation industry tend to think that only the captain flies the airplane, that’s not true ❌ On a regular day both pilots will freely choose their role for the flight ✈️ either “Pilot Flying” (PF) or “Pilot Monitoring” (PM). The PF will perform the take off and landing and act as in command for the duration of the flight. He (or She) will conduct the flight managing the flight path (Vertical and Lateral trajectory) and the airplane energy (Speed, configuration, etc...) in order to operate in total safety. PM will assist the PM, monitor all parameters, call any deviations, talk on the radio, perform the check list and be ready to take control if needed at all times. Being PM can sometimes be more demanding than PF, especially during Non Normal situation, with a lot of tasks to accomplish in a short period of time. That being said, both Captain and First Officer will alternately be PF and PM and perform the same duties on board and BOTH FLY everyday👩✈️🙌👨✈️
Therefore THE difference is the responsibilities and the fact that the Captain is there as the « Final Authority » when decision is to be made ☝️.
I hope I have been able to clear up your thoughts and answer your questions 😅👍
Have a great week everyone #avgeek
