I learned to fly at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport a long time ago. I was never this bad, but maybe the tower guys weren’t so sure back then! Sometimes you just need to make your own fun! 😊

アメリカで最後の夏旅5日目
Horseshoe Bend

After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security.

And you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of a woman
not the grief of a child.

And you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow’s ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way
of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting
for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn
that you really can endure
that you really are strong
and you really do have worth
and you learn and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn. — Veronica Shoffstall

I’ve been slow to post photos from my great Southwestern road trip for some reason, and have just been digesting the experience in my own way. I had never quite done a trip like that before, just going to one state and national park after another. It made such a deep impression on my psyche — we truly are lucky to have these lands protected and accessible. This was from Dead Horse Point, which overlooks the Colorado River as it runs through Canyonlands National Park (much further upriver from the Grand Canyon). Apparently this was one of the last places to be accurately mapped in the United States, and it wasn’t hard to see why. Close as it was to Arches and Moab, the park had a remote feel about it, the land jagged and alien and deeply inhospitable and wild. Can’t recommend it highly enough 🙏

Fear is a funny phenomenon. In some cases, it keeps us safe and protects us from harm. More often, however, fear breeds resistance. In a world where it is increasingly difficult to live in the moment and connect to your true self, fear is generally the culprit.⁣
•⁣
What if I’m not good enough? What if I fail? OR in the most extreme scenarios…What if I don’t survive this?⁣
•⁣
My first experience on the Colorado River was nothing short of dramatic. It was my second time on a SUP and I unintentionally found myself in a class 3 rapid with river water flowing at ~2500 CFS. That sentence meant absolutely nothing to me until I lost my board in said rapid and was instantly pummeled and pinned between rocks by the strength of the upstream water. Thankfully, I was able to pull myself to shore safely.⁣
•⁣
I would be lying if I told you that I wasn’t terrified of drowning when the water was pouring over me. I would be lying if I told you that getting back on that board to finish our 11 mile stretch was easy. I was petrified and painfully aware of Mother Nature’s strength and tenacity. But I was also grateful to be alive. I understood, better than ever, how fragile this life is. How quickly it can be taken from us.⁣
•⁣
Scanning the fresh scrapes on my limbs from grasping at rocks, I felt disempowered and absolutely frightened. Adam reminded me that we were in a remote spot of the river and would have to keep floating. In other words, the only way out was through. I finished the whole 11 mile river stretch and ironically fell in love with the sport and the lessons it taught me that day.⁣
• ⁣
Despite my initial experience, I was able to find multiple meaningful learnings within it all. I learned the way you choose to perceive and interact with fear is where the true power lies. It takes a lot of strength to sit and BE with an unpleasant feeling. Once we acknowledge the unpleasant emotion and FEEL it, we can CHOOSE to perceive with honor and gratitude, then lean into it and RISE UP. By bringing unpleasant emotions to the surface, we make space for confidence, abundance, and love.⁣
•⁣
Do something every day that scares you. And always remember to CELEBRATE when you do🍻💦
