Gimme a tent, a hammock, a book, a dog, and lots of trees and dirt, and I’m happy. (Oh and a blanket too, bc I’m always cold)!
Love hanging out with friends but after a weekend with them, I had to head to the woods with my dog to recharge. As I was pitching my tent, the couple next to me, who arrived the same time I did, approached and introduced themselves. “Hi! Are you camping alone?... Aren’t you scared? Bears are really active in this area... Don’t worry we’ll help you if you need anything.” And that, they did. About 10pm that night, a loud commotion woke me up. There were screaming, crying and foot stomping. When I heard the sound of a horn, I knew there was a bear a ranger was trying to scare away. I peeked through a small opening on my tent, and saw 2 or 3 bears running towards our campsite (the crying I heard must’ve been from the cubs). Instantly, the couple who were still hanging out by their bonfire began banging their pots and pans. Lacking any “weapon” I could use, I just grabbed Vino and quickly planned an escape route through all the noise. Then I heard another horn, followed by silence. It was dead silent for a minute. The bears were gone and we were safe. I stepped out of my tent, carrying Vino, and quietly walked towards the bonfire. This time, my heart was racing (didn’t have time to get scared earlier), but my body was moving so slow. I joined the couple and recounted the whole event. I couldn’t be more grateful for having them save my life, I had to give them something tangible. So I walked back to my campsite, grabbed the Japanese whiskey from my bear vault, and handed it to them. I stayed sober and retreated back to my tent. Uttered a prayer of thanks and hoped to sleep through the night. I closed my eyes and the next time they opened, it was 6:20am. I don’t know how I was able to sleep like a baby, when I never do, but I did. I wiggled my feet to feel Vino, and there he was, asleep, safe and intact as I was. I whispered another thank you, got up, and made the best coffee I’ve had in a very long time. #FirstAdventureWithLumberJackson #SoloMish
