This headline was on the front page of one of Zambia’s national newspapers this week. It’s outrageous to tell the community poisoning dogs was the decision made to solve the situation. Humans should never be buried in shallow grieves, and they should have been reburied again to make sure the dogs could not detect them, but also for health issues. Further, humane population control of dogs is needed, so there wouldn’t be that many starving dogs around scavenging shallow grieves. Instead of these, the easier option is to poison the dogs. Unfortunately, there is so much education needed on animal welfare not only within the community but also within government policy and law makers.
