🎓👩🏻🎓 19th July 2019 👩🏻🎓🎓 I will remember that day for the rest of my life. It was the day that I achieved. The day I came to realise just how far I have come and how much I have overcome. It was the day that I graduated from @uniofnottingham with a Distinction in MSc Graduate Entry Nursing (adult) 🎉🎓 Completing this training in itself is a huge achievement. I learned how to be a nurse in just 2 years, rather than the usual 3. I wrote assignments and a dissertation to a Masters level. I completed placements, working unpaid as a student nurse for 40 hour weeks on a variety of wards and departments, creating a portfolio of reflections and evidence alongside. I was a part of the European Junior Leadership Academy, completing an internship in Portugal and residential weeks in Nottingham and Slovenia. I have had the time of my life.
I have also faced some of the hardest times in my life. In July 2017, my Nanna had a stroke, leaving her paralysed on one side and unable to mobilise or care for herself. She was a hugely independent lady and it was hard to see her go through that. I was also witnessing my Gran battle lung cancer. She, too, was a strong and independent lady. Unfortunately, in September 2017, in the thick of the course, where placements were heavy and assignments and dissertation proposals were due, we lost both of these incredible ladies within 12 days of each other. They were my last living grandparents and they left a huge hole in my life. I miss them greatly.
However, I managed to carry on. I continued to achieve and treat patients and families just like them. Only this time, I had a better understanding and my own experiences made me a better nurse.
However, life just didn’t think I had been through enough. In October 2018, my amazing husband had his own health concerns, resulting in him being unable to work for the last 3 months of my course. It was such a scary and hard time for us. But we made it through!
I have battled so hard to complete this course, and I absolutely smashed it!!! I’m not ashamed to say that I am an incredible person for achieving so highly, when life tried to make me so low.
