Topps Hockey 1980-81 cards were a pretty cool set.
I loved the border design as well as the team logo/graphics placement.
Lots of room for the player on the card.
One problem though.
Topps thought it would be a great idea if they kept the players name hidden in the hockey puck area next to the team name. So you would have to take your fingernail, or a quarter and scratch off the area lottery ticket style, to see who the player was. If you didn’t do that, there was no other indication on the card, front or back as to who the player was. I mean, we all knew who Guy Lafleur was, but still. So kids just scratched away. Not knowing that scratched off cards from this set would drastically decrease in value many years later.
Meanwhile, here in Canada, O-Pee-Chee avoided this feature and left the players name visible, which in turn made for a more attractive looking card.
