With the new live action Lion King remake that has hit theaters today, 7/19/19, I thought it was appropriate to address some of my feelings towards the Lion King, and large animation industries like Disney. It is no surprise to see that Disney has remade one of their most popular and iconic movies in all animation history, The Lion King has won many awards and the hearts of families across the world. The thing is. This movie was always marketed as “original,” “fresh” and “unique,” when these statements couldn’t be farther than the truth. It’s sad to see how much of this truth has been warped and wiped away from history, the claims of being its own original story and not based off of any source material has never angered me more, when the truth is, Kimba, or Leo the White Lion, was and has always been the original “Lion King.”
Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Kimba openly stated Kimba was based off of Disney’s Bambi, Disney even commissioned Tezuka to create Japanese manga of Bambi. This is the difference, Tezuka was inspired by Bambi and created his own original thing, while Disney took Tezuka’s work, never giving him any credibility after the movie was released. The voice actors knew about Kimba, it was an incredibly popular cartoon, many stating that they were going to be starring in a Disney adaptation of Kimba. The similarities between the two media’s are uncanny, angering many Kimba/Leo fans in Japan. What Disney couldn’t buy, they stole, and to make matters worse, the company ordered a cease and desist order on Tezuka’s small little company, for them to shut up about the controversy. The characters, the scenes, early concept art of the characters, it’s basically a carbon copy of the old manga and anime, Kimba/Leo the White Lion! And to this day, Tezuka still doesn’t get his name on the film, and not even this new remake. Kimba/Leo gets nothing. No credit. No remade adaptations...and the Lion King gets a fancy new remake.
Disney has never had an original idea! They don't care about intellectual property, if they can’t buy originality from you, they’ll steal it.
