The Joint, Ocean Beach
Sushi and tapas. It shouldn't work at all.
Usually, if I see any menu that is all over the map, or they just stick sushi on the menu where it doesn't belong, man I am ready for the let down.
I like to think I am a sushi connoisseur - not a snob, I will gobble up that Jensen's supermarket sushi, grab the one they just made and it'll be fresh and tasty. But, 99% of the time, if its anything 'plus' sushi, that means some ice cold, flavorless rolls or nigiri with dry, crumbly rice.
So, I was ready to hate the place. To be honest, the first time I went I didn't dig it, and didn't go back for a long time. But I've seen the error in my ways.
The Joint is in that 1%. It's a sushi joint. It's a tapas joint. Both are kick ass.
The sushi side of the menu is up there with the all my other favorite sushi spots. I mostly get sushi there. Not just sushi, of course, but you know, that whole side of the menu.
The specials are quite special - celebrating a big moment, got an expense account, or just like to blow your expendable income on a few moments of flavor bliss? Get on that a5 wagyu special wagon, holy bananas.
I've tried a few joints on the tapas side, and they are all worth it. If you work in that kitchen, hats off, slow clap, standing ovation. Everything is consistently good from both sides of the menu.
Local drafts are $4 on Monday & Thursday. The bar and waitstaff (Jamie, Bonnie, Annabelle, Leah, John, Connor.. everyone else..) are cool as shit; super welcoming and laid back. The beers are always rotating and always interesting. Great music, not too loud, you can shoot the breeze with your dining mates, and your neighbors (you'll be eyeing their dishes). It's friendly. It's OB AF.
Things we keep ordering:
Any nigiri or sashimi combo (the specials are worth it)
Miso soup with mushrooms
Shrimp & Grits
Blackened Salmon Tacos
See y'all there.
