I absolutely love prescribing tempo to the majority of the exercises I have my clients perform.

Not only is it a great tool for building strength, but it also helps the client become aware and thus improve their body positioning, movement control and overall mind-muscle connection. I'm a stickler for proper and correct movement, which is why the tempo is one my training pillars.
β€’
Next time your at the gym, try adding some tempo to your lifts. Start simple though! If it's the first time you're trying these, maybe just add some seconds to the eccentric or lowering phase of the lift or add a pause at the end of said phase. I suggest no more than 2 or 3 seconds to start with. Once you get the hang of it, then you can start getting creative and dive into more complex and challenging tempos.

The tall kneeling shoulder press is an exercise I like to use in order to bring my client's attention to their midsection during an overhead press.

In @eriebird case, through her assessment, I identified that she had some difficulty bracing her core during overhead pressing exercises. With that information in hand, I started her on a progression scheme that has taken her from seated landmine presses to seated DB presses to half kneeling landmine presses to half kneeling DB presses to tall kneeling DB presses and then on to full standing presses. I've also been having her do planks and side planks to cap-off her training sessions in order to bolster her core strength and stability.

This is one of the many reasons why I love individualized training. Having their own training program let's the clients shore-up their weaknesses instead of doing a group class which may or may not be focused on what they actually need to work on. Ask yourself: WHY DO YOU GO TO THE GYM? Chances are that your answer is going to be to reach your fitness goals, whether it be losing weight, gaining muscle, increasing strength, improving endurance, etc. Each of us has different goals, strengths, weaknesses and skills because we are all individuals. Another one of my personalized training clients who I'm extremely proud of, my brother from another mother, @j.b.carney

In 12 weeks, he dropped 24 lbs and over 10% body fat! He's not only looking good and feeling his best, he's also gotten stronger and has considerably improved his cardio. He's lifting heavier than he did before, and with impeccable form I must say, and he also doesn't get tired doing cardio/conditioning as quickly as he did before we started working together.

What I truly admire from Jon is his non-stop work ethic. This guys works long hours at his job and still finds a way to come to the gym and workout at a high level. He doesn't blame or complain, he just works. He's also incredibly disciplined by taking care of himself both inside and out of the gym, which is part of the reason why he's gotten these results. By slowing down the movement, it makes it easier for the client to focus on and actually feel how to properly perform said exercise. This, in turn, will keep the client safe as the weight gets heavier.

Now that we're talking about heavier weights, time under tension is also a great strength-building mechanism. By placing the tempo on different parts of the lifts, you can actually pin-point the segment you want to get stronger on. Having trouble keeping a good posture at the bottom of a squat? Started with straight strength work in the form of barbell strict presses and then tailed off into some hypertrophy employing exercises like the one shown in this video. Belt Squats

We absolutely love using this exercise to target the anterior lower body. Unlike other movements, like the back squat, goblet squat, front squat and zercher squat, among others, where the upper body and trunk are in play and where we can also be limited by injuries, mobility or the shear pressure the weight can place on our spine, shoulders and wrists, the belt squat allows us to directly and safely focus on our lower body. This, in turn, enables us to build bigger and stronger legs and also provides an opportunity to progress towards more complex squatting variations.
β€’
Don't get us wrong though, we're not saying the other squatting variations are bad or unnecessary. Not at all, but we do have to keep in mind the needs, limits and goals of each client. What may be good for one, may not be for another. This is the reason why having a personalized training program is important and, we would argue, necessary for lasting results. If a client cannot physically perform an exercise the right way, why force them to? Why not find a variation that works for them and then start progressing them from there?
β€’
The mistake many of us coaches and trainers make is that we train our clients as if we're training ourselves. Remember that everyone is different and we're all on different stages/levels of our respective fitness journeys. Sit down, talk to the client to find out what they want, physically assess them to see what they can and can't do right now and then come up with a plan that's tailor-made for the client in order to help him or her reach their goals.

Started at 325# and finished at 335# today. Next week, I'll start where I finished today (335#) and hit 345# by the end of the session. Then keep repeating this process week after week and see where I end up on week 6 (hopefully very close to 4-hundo).

Whether it's fat loss, muscle gains, increased strength or more detailed ones like getting your first pull-up or improving your back squat PB by 5# or shaving some time off your 1 mile run, set your focus on something and never take your eyes off it until you achieve it.

We've been slowly building up the distance on the air bike throughout these months to a total a 40 miles, which is the length of her race.

Aside from that, we're also firm believers that you must train in an environment that closely mimics the one you'll be in during the event. We believe that, aside from training the body for what is to come, we must also condition the mind to be ready to deal with the environment it is going to be performing in. Failure to do so, may result in a decrease in performance. Since Ashley's bike race is held outdoors, we decided to also take her training outdoors.

The split squat is one of our staple movements when it comes to leg building and strengthening exercises.
β€’
Obviously, and as the name suggests, you keep a split leg position throughout the entirety of the movement. It's also important to move your body straight down and straight up, always keeping the lead knee behind the lead toe in order to not put undue pressure on your front knee. You can solidify this proper line of action by keeping your torso upright and ensuring you have good posture at all times. Back knee must slightly tap the floor on each repetition. It's also imperative that, when coming up from the bottom of the split squat, you drive through the front leg until it's fully extended. Finally, a small detail that is often times left out in the split squat is that the back knee is always bent. Obviously, fully bent at the bottom and only slightly bent at the top.
β€’
Once you become proficient at the regular split squat, you can add some difficulty to the movement by utilizing one of its variations. On our second video, you can see the front foot elevated variation of the split squat. This enables us to add a deficit to this exercise, thus increasing the range of motion. You can also go back foot elevated, use a barbell on the back rack or front rack position, kettlebells and the such.

#treetrunksforlegstuesday β€’ The split squat is one of our staple movements when it comes to leg building and strengthening exercises. β€’ Obviously, and as the name suggests, you keep a split leg position throughout the entirety of the movement. It's also important to move your body straight down and straight up, always keeping the lead knee behind the lead toe in order to not put undue pressure on your front knee. You can solidify this proper line of action by keeping your torso upright and ensuring you have good posture at all times. Back knee must slightly tap the floor on each repetition. It's also imperative that, when coming up from the bottom of the split squat, you drive through the front leg until it's fully extended. Finally, a small detail that is often times left out in the split squat is that the back knee is always bent. Obviously, fully bent at the bottom and only slightly bent at the top. β€’ Once you become proficient at the regular split squat, you can add some difficulty to the movement by utilizing one of its variations. On our second video, you can see the front foot elevated variation of the split squat. This enables us to add a deficit to this exercise, thus increasing the range of motion. You can also go back foot elevated, use a barbell on the back rack or front rack position, kettlebells and the such. β€’ Go ahead!
