This is me 12 years ago making friends with a pack of street dogs in Guatemala.
Everyone always told me not to touch the dogs, but I couldn't help it.
They were quite fearful at first, but after a few days of sharing my breakfast with them, I was a part of the pack.
They saved my life one morning, as I was walking to class. Far down the dirt road I could see a rottweiler foaming at the mouth, just coming for me, running as fast as he could, snarling and growling. There was no where to go. No trees or fences to climb. I thought I was done for.
All of a sudden, the entire pack of street dogs turned around, and took off after him and chased him away. From this day forward, I agreed with myself that making friends with street dogs was in fact safer, than not making friends with street dogs.
On other trips later on, I continued making street dog friends everywhere I traveled. I had similar experiences in India, where street dogs would walk me home at night right to my doorstep.
I'm not telling everyone to make friends with street dogs, but the lesson here is that Dogs are the most loyal companions a human could ask for. Once you befriend them, they are friends for life. Even if they don't know you that well, they will put themselves in danger just to protect you.
Personally, I couldn't ask for better friends than dogs.❤️ Photo by @maclupusdotnet
